FIRST and foremost, I was an artist, then I became a mother! Being a mother/artist/entrepreneur/teacher/friend is no joke! Balance is key, and not always my reality! But in between laundry, dinner, board meetings, and family time, I'm able to retreat to the studio and get crazy creative! So yeah, that's the current backstory.
My passion is design and creativity. At the University of Michigan, School of Art and Design, I discovered that I could merge my love of science and art to create jewelry. I graduated with dual degrees in Industrial Design/Jewelry Design, and adopted the title of Metalsmith. I also studied gemology at the Gemological Institute of America, and added diamonds and colored gemstones to my palate.
I've been designing and creating jewelry for over 20 years. In 2003, I was asked to participate in an exhibition that showcased Detroit's significance in my life. Out of that project, came a unique line called The D The Jewelry. It pays homage to the City of Detroit; celebrating the industrial and innovative, hard-working and creative spirit of the city. Being a life-long Detroiter, my goal is to enable others to show their love and pride for the city with classic pieces. The jewelry is well received, by people of all ages, regionally and internationally. Jewelry lovers especially appreciate the high-quality craftsmanship.
I design, and previously laser cut and hand fabricate all pieces. I have recently begun to outsource laser cutting and casting due to Covid-19 as well as health concerns. #ittakesavillage!
Our ultimate mission is to commence philanthropic endeavors aimed at Detroit's creative youth. We plan to focus on mentoring, entrepreneurship, and scholarship creation. There are too many extremely talented young people in my hometown that could use a little guidance along the way. #PayItForward
